Journal History

Jurnal Wasian was first established in 2014 by the Manado Environmental and Forestry Research and Development Center (BPPLHK). In 2021, institutional restructuring and changes in national policy resulted in BPPLHK no longer being able to continue its role as journal manager. In December 2023, the management of Jurnal Wasian was formally transferred to the Department of Forestry, Faculty of Agriculture, Muhammadiyah University of Makassar.
Since the transfer of management, the Department of Forestry has undertaken a series of structural and technical improvements to ensure the journal operates in accordance with recognised international publishing standards. These measures include the migration of the journal to a dedicated university server, the implementation of a double-blind peer-review system, assignment of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to all published articles, adoption of Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) principles, integration of Crossmark, clarification of open-access licensing, and enhancement of metadata quality. The ISSN ownership has also been formally transferred to the current managing institution, confirming the continuity of the journal under its new publisher.
The name “Wasian” is derived from a local tree species in eastern Indonesia that is traditionally associated with resilience and communal space. This reflects the journal’s focus on conservation-oriented research and its commitment to contextual and place-based scholarship.
